The Met Gala 2015: China Through The Looking Glass

Monday, May 04, 2015

This year, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s celebrated the opening of it’s new exhibition China: Through the Looking Glass. Many of the event’s guests paid tribute to the theme in sheer gowns, florals and traditional Chinese silhouettes.
Rihanna’s accolade caught my eye for all the right reasons as she showcased Chinese couturier Guo Pei in one of the most talked about outfits of the event. Featuring a heavy, exaggerated train, Pei created a traditional and aesthetically regal gown which to me encapsulated the theme most appropriately.
In Chinese culture yellow is the colour of choice for most emperors and high rulers and is considered the most beautiful and prestigious tone, it’s really the only colour you could have expected Pei to envision Rihanna in. He made her the personification of the saying“yellow generates yin and yang,” implying that the shade is the center of everything.
With a subtle brocade running through the gown, Pei highlighted traditional materials and textures in a garment that paid tribute and honored Asian culture without appropriating it.
